Kerosene Run Fan
One of the unique features of the palace is the fan preserved here which does not need a 220 volts of current to function but retrieves energy through kerosene oil. The oil burns and generates heats and gas the pressure of which makes the turbine at the base of fan move. The turbine in turn makes the pans of fan rotate thereby generating fast rotator motion and cold breeze. A part of City Palace complex has been made into luxury hotels which are called Shiv Niwas Palace and Fateh Prakash Palace.
Maharana Uday Singh started the construction of this palace in 1569, since than a number of ruling Kings continued its construction and it took about 11 phases for it to get complete. What wonders the onlookers is the uniformity and sync with which it has been made as despite of being made into several phases it never looks abrupt.
Major Sight Seeing Places
The imposing Tripoliya Gate welcomes you with seven arches or toranas to its left, commemorating the seven times when the maharajas were weighed against silver and gold which was then distributed among the people. On the right is a wall called Agad across which elephants were made to fight across each other – a royal idea of support.
This is also called ManakMahal which is a masterpiece of glass and mirror work. Be it a chair, bed or a sofa, everything at the gallery is made of glass. Live music and folk dance performances were enjoyed by royals in the mirror gallery. RanaSajjan Singh of Udaipur bought all these glass decor from England through F& C Osler and Company in 1877. The hugeness of Durbar Hall can be felt as soon as you enter the grand premises. The walls of the hall are adorned with paintings of Kings and Queens of Rajasthan depicting their luxurious lifestyle. The gallery of the hall was used by the royal ladies to observe the Durbar proceedings. This hall has luxuriant interior with some unusually large chandeliers. Weapons of the maharajas and also some of their unique portraits are also depicted here. The foundation stone for this hall was laid by Lord Minto, the Viceroy of India, in 1909, during the rule of MaharanaFateh Singh and was then called Minto Hall.
